Holiday Happenings in Mexico

Our first Christmas in Mexico

So refreshing…. Christmas in Mexico starts about the end of the first week in December.  None of the US stores starting Christmas decorating starting right after Fourth of July.  Even Wal-Mart waits until the first of December to put out the decorations, wrapping paper etc.

Christmas in the state of  Jalisco  is all about family.  People are stretching their budget to get toys for the kids and are all about smiles when shopping. Working people get creative asking to wash your car in the parking lot at Wal-Mart, selling trinkets, colorful wreaths and are grateful for any spare change you might with to donate.  A very old woman who sits by the grocery store and embroiders kitchen towels, has captured my heart and is always the recipient of a few pesos.
My Mexican Sweetheart

Since Judd, Shari and the two Grandkids were coming, we found a small family who specialized in Mexican  food for family parties  They brought a wheel borrow full of wood and lit it up in the carport.

Fires goin' and the Senora is makin' the tacos
The  mama Senora  made 150 tortillas by hand with the dough on a meta and cooked them on the heated grill. The tortillas then  went with  delicious dishes of pork with mole sauce, ribs in sauce, chicken for fajitas and mushrooms were served as fajitas, tacos, plus all of the fixins including refried beans, salsa, and Spanish Rice.   We invited some new friends and neighbors stuffed ourselves and we still have enough in the freezer for at least 6 or 8 meals

We had a piñata for the boys.  It WAS a reindeer but even before he met his final fate, he had lost a leg and one antler and an ear.  Thank God for duct tape.

Rudolf is about ready to meet his maker
The Christmas festivities included a trip to the Guadalajara Zoo…Really cool with a chair lift, train and safari bus and rides for the kids.  I agreed to ride the Rocket and decided I am not ready to give up roller coasters yet.

I hate to talk about it but so far the temperature has been about 50 in the morning and 75 in the afternoon…so sorry for those of you who are shivering  in single digit weather.
We went to Guadalajara for New Years and stayed downtown near the plaza.  Some beautiful architecture.
After a couple of days, we decided we are much happier in Ajijic than we would be in a large city.
All of the three of us have signed up for a Spanish Class.  Angie and I are in the intermediate class while Trish has decided on the beginning class.  Been studying flash cards and the workbook to be ready for the upcoming class.

Time to start thinking about New Year’s Resolutions…My first one is to continue to enjoy our new home in Mexico on a daily basis A downtown T-Shirt said it best…”We are on the FUN side of the wall”.
Enjoy...Steve

  1. So glad you had such a wonderful first Christmas in Ajijic, Mexico,
I noted your comment about being glad you chose Ajijic rather than a large city. I have been wondering if you missed the cosmopolitan atmosphere. I too feel sorry, (snicker, snicker) for your friends that suffer through winter weather, we also have had beautiful weather and temperatures in Peoria, AZ. We have not had any rain for 85 days and counting.
I loved the portable BBQ, bricks and all. My mouth is watering for the taste of a real, fresh tortilla. I am glad we still celebrate Christmas with more emphasis on Family, Friends and Food than on presents.
I wish you and Angie a healthy, fun filled 2018,
    Steve V
